Medical Volunteering in Tanzania

Tanzania like many developing countries suffers from a lot of avoidable death that are due to lack of adequate health facilities and qualified health Practitioners. The Government efforts are not enough to help alleviate this challenge and hence help from Volunteers and different development partners is highly needed

This medical volunteering in Tanzania program has been the leading program in terms of attracting more volunteers. This volunteer program is located in all our three program locations, Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar and Arusha. We Place volunteers into hospitals that will foster professional development, give volunteers an opportunity to help and learn, but also hospitals that are in need of help.

Hospitals that we place volunteers in Tanzania are mid-size hospitals of around 100 beds. Our medical volunteering in Tanzania program is available throughout the year. Depending with your availability but you can do a minimum of two weeks volunteering to more than a year.  Our program is not only available to medical students and Professionals but also to pre medical students. The distance from the accommodation to the Hospital is around 3 Kilometers and most volunteers prefer to use public transport (Daladala) as a means of Transport to and from the Hospital.

Medical Internship in Tanzania

It has been a trend now for medical students from western world to do their medical Internship in Africa and Tanzania has been one of their favorite destinations. All hospitals that we place our medical student for Internship are ideal Hospitals for the purpose of nurturing learning and gaining experience. To make the most of Volunteer jobs in Tanzania, you need an ideal placement for your program. KIVOLEX Volunteers has invested a lot in vetting for the right Hospitals for development of our medical Interns in Tanzania.

Just like other medical volunteer programs, our Medical Internship in Tanzania Program is also available in all our three locations. You can choose whether it’s Dar es Salaam, Tanzania or Arusha. All our Hospitals are mid-size hospitals giving ideal opportunity for students to learn and practice unlike Big and very busy hospital. Our Medical Internship in Tanzania program is available throughout the year, with minimum commitment time being Two weeks. Participants in this program are required to be medical students only.

Childcare Volunteer in Tanzania

Our Childcare volunteer in Tanzania program is ideal for all children lovers and teachers. The love for the children is universal and no matter the location or Economic status all children deserve love and care. It is obvious that due to Economic difference and inequalities not all children get the love and care they deserve. It is for this reason that people decide to come out of their comfort zone and travel to Tanzania, Africa to give back to the world and at least reduce that inequality.

This Volunteer program is also available in Dar Es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar. Childcare Volunteer in Tanzania Program is free for anybody to join as long as one is above 18 years of age and has an intermediate command of English Language. This program is also available throughout the year with a minimum commitment of two weeks.

Volunteer in Tanzania Orphanage

Orphanages in Tanzania are quite different to Orphanages in other parts of the world. This is because of the extended family nature of Tanzania families. An Orphan can still be staying with an extended member of the family and still be visiting an orphanage. In most cases these extended members of the family are unable to cater for basic needs of the orphan hence these orphans have to visit an orphanage to get basic needs. This means not all orphans would be staying in an orphanage, some would come in the morning and leave in the evening.

It is very true that to volunteer in Tanzania Orphanage is no big difference with a teaching volunteer program. However to volunteer in Tanzania Orphanage is more diverse as you will get involved in activities more than just teaching. In Tanzania Orphanage you will be cooking for the orphans, Help in cleaning, Washing clothes, help in fetching water and all other activities that will make an Orphanage a better place for the children to live.

This program like all other programs is available throughout the year and in all our program locations. Anyone can Join this program as long as one has desire to help and is above the age of 18 years. You also need to have at least an Intermediate command of English language. A heart of giving back is paramount in this program.

Volunteer Teaching in Tanzania

Education is essential in the development of any Nation and hence our volunteer teaching in Tanzania program is also very essential. This program aims at providing educational assistance to local teachers in subject and languages that volunteers are Conversant with. English teaching has proven to be one of the areas that volunteers have so far provided a lot of help. Other subjects taught by volunteers include Math, Geography, Science and Physical education. Teaching is one of the volunteer jobs in Tanzania core programs and most preferred one. It doesn’t require a lot of experience, because most of the teaching is mostly done in primarily schools, of which most volunteers are post that level. Volunteers would in most cases need to be 18 years and above plus and intermediate command of English language to be accepted to this program.

Volunteer teaching in Tanzania program is also available throughout the year in our three placement Cities of Arusha, Dar Es Salam and Zanzibar. Teaching is a discipline that fit in most professional fields. Having teaching volunteering experience in your CV especially in a developed country like Tanzania could be a big boost to your CV. Hence it is a project that most student and graduates looking for jobs and building careers prefer to do.

Typical day

In general, expect to work 4-6 hours per day. Volunteers usually wake up early, around 7 or 8 and have breakfast. After breakfast, their workday begins, usually somewhere between 8 and 10 AM.

Your workday will usually end around 2 or 3 PM.

Although you will be expected to be at your work placement every weekday, the rest of your time in Tanzania is essentially left up to you to decide how to use it.

Your daily schedule may change, as well, so you’ll need to be flexible and ready to adjust.

KIVOLEX anticipates and encourages your desire for travel and adventure. Your time away from volunteering is open for you to decide your activities. You may decide to take advantage of the local culture and spend time within the community over the weekend. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to explore Tanzania and all it has to offer. Long weekends can be taken to go on safari or to travel further afield to places such as Zanzibar, Dar-es-salaam, Kenya or Uganda. If volunteers wish to volunteer over the weekends they can join local teams and visit other children organizations to spend time simply playing with and entertaining the children.

Tanzania is a big country full of exciting adventure. If you want to stay on in country after volunteering, we’ll help you arrange any number of trips and activities. You can go on safari through the Serengeti or Ngorogoro- which has the highest density of safari animals anywhere on earth. You can relax on the spice island of Zanzibar, taking in non stop sun, white beaches and clear blue seas. Swimming with dolphins, PADI dive courses, spear gun fishing, sleeping in hammocks strung between palm trees on the beach.. We like Zanzibar! If physical adventure is more your thing, Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing mountain in the world is right on your doorstep. A five day climb, and nearly 4 miles high, with temperatures down to minus 25 at the summit, it’s not for the faint of heart, but it can be done, and the sense of achievement will stay with you for a lifetime.

Past Volunteer Reviews

Martin C, United Kingdom. Volunteered in 2020

To sum it all up, it was a memorable and valuable experience, the rotation of work at the hospital was very nice; examination, scaling, fillings and extraction were among the activities we did. It was so nice to learn of the Tanzania dental clinic setup. Accommodation was very fine bedroom, food and bathrooms were all in good condition. Innocent our local coordinator is a very friendly and nice person. He helped us with almost everything and made our stay in Tanzania very comfortable. We also had a wonderful experience going for Safari and learning of the local culture.

Katie A, Australia. Volunteered in 2021

Loved my experience with KIVOLEX. I got to help out in the emergency department, pediatric/male/female wards and the maternity department of the hospital. I witnessed/assisted with natural births, as well as witnessed c-sections in theatre. The people at the hospital were fabulous, as was Innocent and Angel (at the volunteer house). The food was excellent, as was the accommodation. Lots of activities to do in spare time, I went up to Arusha to do safaris, and Kilimanjaro, and spent a lot of time with coworkers at the hospital. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was getting the bus to and from work – if you can organise a driver then I would recommend doing that. I would do this experience again, without a shadow of a doubt, and highly recommend it!

Heidi L, Denmark. Volunteered in 2021

The people at KIVOLEX are kind and helpful. My friends and I had a good time as KIVOLEX volunteers. It was my very first trip to Africa, and I would definitely want to go back. It was my dream to one day work in Africa and in exact environment KIVOLEX took me. As a nurse student I had not only a learning experience but also a working one, although supervised but at times they would let me practice as a nurse and get that feeling of being registered and licensed nurse. The hospital is a very good place to learn and grow as a junior nurse from abroad. If you are looking to learning and get experience in a different environment outside your comfort zone, then Tanzania is a place to be. Cardinal Lugambwa Hospital introduced to almost everything I wished to experience.

Sarah W, USA. Volunteered in 2021

This trip is a life changing and it actually made me believe there is a whole other world outside the United States. Life is completing different in Dar Es Salaam, everything about it. The food, the people, traditions and overall dynamics are different from the USA. At the clinic the kinds were wonderful; they changed me in several aspects. Kids with their parents visited the clinic for treatment but to see them having fun with a big smile on their faces was just wonderful. I integrated with these kids and created a very strong bond and I am so grateful for that. Recording their vital sign like heart beat, temperature and taking their weight was just amazing. I strongly recommend this trip to anyone who likes to deal with kids in a child and maternal health department of a hospital.
